PART 3

Chapter Seven

Saturday the 29th of August, 2006

It was a blazing hot summer’s day and a luminous yellow sun warmed the sky. Stifling and uncomfortable, it was a day lacking even the slightest breeze to freshen the air; all around, people were drooping and fading like wilted flowers. The unyielding weather had left everyone feeling dehydrated and weak.

The sky was an effervescent blue, and there was not a cloud in sight, and as butterflies fluttered from flower to flower, the day seemed blessed with beauty and happiness. It was this day that Joseph and Katya chose to be married.

Rhonda had been invited, but she declined the invitation, seeing it as somewhat mocking. To watch the man that she loved marry someone else, even she could not be that gracious; she was, after all only human. Everyone was aware that Rhonda and Joseph were no longer together, and soon Steven and Yolanda came to be in the know. This came as a relief, as well as a source of embarrassment for Rhonda; she did not like her pride to be thwarted thus. Her status as a respectable woman violated. Her husband leaving her for a common tart that was half his age.

Steven and Yolanda sympathised with Rhonda, and had also refused to attend the wedding out of loyalty to her.

Steven was disappointed in his friend, and ashamed of him, it was people like him that gave men a bad name. A man that had everything going for him; status, wealth, a beautiful wife and home. To risk all that for a common tart. Steven had to admit that Katya was beautiful, disturbingly so, but she wasn’t worth losing a family for. He himself now had three beautiful children, two sons, and a girl that they had adopted; and he would never put that at risk for any woman.

The only good thing that came from the revelation was that Rhonda could now confide in her friend about the state of her marriage and the resulting divorce, except nowadays she didn’t really want to.

Rhonda had declined the wedding invitation, but she was still present at the wedding, choosing instead to hide in the car lot that faced the church.

She was dressed like she was in mourning, and she was. Attired head to toe in black, with a black wide rimmed-hat, and black sunshades; nobody must suspect her, or notice that she was there.

It was a very hot morning, and Rhonda was positively baking in her outfit. At around 9.30am Rhonda noticed a white limousine pull up outside the church, adorned with white bows and ribbons. All traffic stopped as the beautiful bride stepped out of the car. First came a dainty white foot in an exquisite designer shoe, then came a slender arm in a white glove, which was immediately and eagerly grasped by the waiting attendant. Rhonda could only see all this from the back; she craned her neck to see the rest of the bride’s outfit. After some time Rhonda saw
